Twenty two years later

During my senior year of high school, my dad took me and a good childhood friend, Sarah, to Zermatt to ski — it was such a great trip, I was excited to be able to make it work to visit this year with our family. The village was as cute as I remembered and we enjoyed a couple days of hiking and walking around the car-free town (visitors park in nearby Täsch, three miles from Zermatt, and shuttle in either by taxi, train, or helicopter–we went the train route). We hiked, visited another Lindt shop (#12 of our trip!), and had a couple more delicious fondue and raclette meals.

During our drive from Interlaken to Zermatt, we chose the shorter of two routes that Google Maps offered and then came upon this line of cars… We paid a toll, which seemed awfully expensive (even by Swiss standards), and were not sure what we had gotten ourselves into!
Somehow we eventually put together that we were going to board a car shuttle train!
The train took passengers through a 15 minute / 10-mile tunnel from Realp (population 153) to Oberwald (population 277). This was so much better than driving up and down winding mountain roads! As we were going through the tunnel, Michael and I felt like we were in the boat scene of Willy Wonka, thankfully minus the frightening imagery on the walls.
