Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau (crazy names!)

Last week we took a day trip from Reutte, where we were staying at the bottom of the Romantic Road, to see two castles: Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Neuschwanstein is partly what inspired the Disney Castle and was used as a retreat for Ludwig II of Bavaria, the king of Bavaria. It was built in the 19th century on a mountainside and paid for out of Ludwig’s personal fortune, rather than by public funds. There was an audio guide that we used to learn about the different rooms in the castle. The best part was seeing Neuschwanstein from St. Mary’s Bridge, a bridge built farther back into the mountain that offers a stunning view of the castle and its surrounding countryside. Hohenschwangau Castle is relatively close to Neuschwanstein and was Ludwig’s childhood home. We decided not to go inside that one but got a great view from the bottom of the hill and later from the road. The scenery in this part of the world is so pretty!!
