Happy tummies in Munich

After staying just across the German-Austrian border for a few nights at the base of the Romantic Road in the Austrian town of Breitenwang, we drove back up into Germany for three nights in Munich. We had two full days there, so we spent the first day walking about 13 miles seeing every important site that we could in the central part of the city, and then the second day we took it a little easier, driving out to the Olympic Stadium where they hosted the 1972 Olympics. Here are some highlights of our time in Munich:

  • We had some of the best coffee of our entire trip. We didn’t realize Munich was such a coffee city, so this came as somewhat of a surprised but we tried three different cafes and all three are easily in our top 10 coffee spots of the trip, if not top 5! The cafes were Beaver Coffee, Man vs Machine, and Vits Der Kaffee. So good!!!
  • Doner Kebab has become a staple in our travels ever since we had our first one in Florence last summer. It’s typically so reliable and quick, and often quite delicious. Our first afternoon in Munich we went to Westends Best Doner near our hotel and had what might’ve been the best Doner Kebab of the trip–it was in the top 3 for sure. We went back on our way out of town our last morning for a late breakfast/early lunch in the car. Mouth watering goodness!!!
  • Near the end of our long walking day we made our way over to Eisbachwelle at the edge of the massive English Garden where there is a continuous wave on the Eisbach River where enthusiasts surf year-round and crowds sit and watch the performances. There is one line on either side of the river and the surfers take turns, typically starting by throwing their board into the water and jumping on it right as it hits the wave–the timing looks like it has to be perfect and I don’t think we saw a single wipe-out at the beginning of someone’s run during the 20-30 minutes that we sat watching. Mesmerizing!!!
  • Aside from running into another Bear Creek family (which might be the craziest thing to happen this trip…just think about how unlikely that is), we also saw a guy in a Seahawks shirt who we talked to for a few minutes during our walk. He was a local and loves Seattle and was really excited to hear that’s where we were from.

Munich was very cool and between the Lindt, the Doner Kebab, and the incredible coffee shops, we left for Salzburg with very happy tummies
