2nd hike in the Dolomites: Cinque Torri

On our second full day staying in Cortina, we drove southeast 30 minutes and parked by the side of the road to hike up to the Cinque Torri (“five towers”), which was a strategic military location and battleground during WWI. Today it serves as a prime location for hikers to congregate and enjoy some fantastic views. It took us just under two hours to reach the top. The trail was quite a bit more difficult than the Tre Cime hike with lots of loose rocks and steep grades to overcome, while also navigating a fairly busy two-way trail that was only one-body wide in some spots. Our original plan had been to go back the way we came, but we didn’t feel much like following that same path in the opposite direction, so instead we decided to hike down under a chair lift, which worked out pretty well! Our stats for this hike were 5.4 miles, 3.5 hours, and 1,700 feet of elevation gain. And best of all, zero painful falls!

the start of our hike, at 2055 meters
before we started the ascent, we got to traverse some stream-lined meadows that were so tranquil
we also came across this large herd of sheep and goats!
the path had some obstacles like this one to help protect against erosion
time for a Keegie-rest photo-op
those are the five towers in the background…they kind of match my hairstyle for the day
at the summit, 2255 meters up
exploring around at the top near the towers
we got to see some people climbing up the face of the towers and one person was crossing between two of them hanging from a rope
walking back down under the chair lift
