Wieliczka Salt Mine & Graduation Tower

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the most valuable monuments in Poland. Each year it is visited by more than one million tourists from all over the world. It was excavated from the 13th century and produced table salt continuously until 2007. It is one of the world’s oldest salt mines.  I loved it there! The temperature got down to about 59 degrees Fahrenheit and outside it was 75F. We went down 185 meters below ground! There were a lot of really cool rooms in the mine. They were all made almost entirely of salt! The walls, ceiling, even the stairs were salt! In some of the rooms there were some really cool and pretty statues and chandeliers all made of salt. There was even a Last Supper made of salt! I learned a lot and it was really fun.

After that we went to a tower called the Graduation Tower. It was so peaceful. The tower was made up of a lot of sticks with salt water trickling down from the very top. Breathing in the light mist is said to help some lung diseases. The natural brine mist that forms in the area of the graduation tower is similar to the that of the seacoast. It felt so nice!
