Hiking and Floating

A couple of our activities that we did in La Fortuna included a night hike and a safari float. On the night hike we got flashlights from our guide, and we all looked for the animals that the forest held. Our guide spoke English extremely well, and was very nice. We saw quite a few animals including herons, king fishers, bull frogs, tiny dink frogs, different types of lizards, lots of insects, and we even got to see a caiman (a small crocodile) on land! It was pretty funny because we started to get closer to it as it was slowly walking away, and then it made a pretty deep growling noise and started to move towards us. Our tour guide then said to us “uh oh–we’d better go,” which isn’t really a good thing if your local guide says that!

My favorite animals that we saw were the caiman and also the little dink frogs that were about an inch in size and would make a dink! dink! noise (hence the name, “dink frogs”). The tour organization was family run and afterwards, we enjoyed a delicious snack of black bean empanadas and sugar cane water and ginger that tasted amazing (it kind of tasted like sugar cane water with ginger).

We had sugar cane water again (without ginger) after our cool hot safari float the next day. We saw many more animals during the float, including crocodiles, a porcupine in a tree, a sloth holding her baby in a tree, howler monkeys (that howl if they get mad), birds, and quite a few big iguanas. The guides were so friendly. Along with our sugar cane juice, we got to have a snack of cheese and plantains (kind of like bananas) heated up and in tortillas. I am very glad that we got to see all of these animals by hiking and floating!

early during the safari float we were lucky enough to come upon this large family of monkeys messing around in a tree next to the river
we were so happy to see a crocodile! and even happier it wasn’t in the water!!
we were not expecting to see any porcupines on the river float, yet here one was (shown above)

and a little further down the river was this amazing sloth holding a baby (shown below)
we were treated to an authentic meal at the end of the river float, and the little building was surrounded by huge iguanas
