Singapore is a fascinating country with a lot of rules. We knew going in that we needed to do a complete 180 on the issue of jaywalking, having spent three months mostly in countries where jaywalking is a necessity and going to a country where jaywalking is a criminal offense punishable by up to 3 months in jail. We had read of a few other quirky-to-us laws before arriving, such as no spitting and no gum chewing. What’s especially interesting about Singapore is the great lengths they go to not only to severely punish criminals as a deterrent, but also to post warnings trying to stop criminal and reckless behavior before incidents happen.
