We got to spend two days exploring Valletta, the city across the water from our apartment in Sliema. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valletta sits on a narrow peninsula, surrounded by fortifications and towers. Multiple movies have been filmed here, including “Gladiator” and “Captain Phillips”, and I can see why: the sky is constantly blue, providing a beautiful backdrop for the beige stone buildings, and it is remarkably hot, perfect for a sweaty gladiator scene. We’re all big fans of Valletta!

below: Siege Bell War Memorial, commemorating the siege of Malta during WWII. Malta was a British Colony during the war and Axis powers attempted to seize the land. More than 7,000 soldiers were killed and the island was the most bombed location of the war. Queen Elizabeth unveiled the memorial in 1992 in memory of all the people who died at war.
