In Siem Reap we went to Phare, The Cambodian Circus. It was incredible!! The story was called White Gold, which refers to rice which is really important in Cambodian culture. Throughout the performance the performers were playing with rice and doing tricks and flips and juggling. Some parts were really scary like when a performer was balancing on tubes and blocks to impress a food seller so she would give him food. There were no animals in the show, only people, and 75% of profits go to their school which offers free education for 1200 kids in an at-risk area. It was a great show and I’m so glad we got to see it!
The circus reminds me the art of Chinese acrobats. It’s indeed very scary to watch! They may have taken the training from a young age and practice daily. What a great experience to see very different type of ‘circus’ without animals.
I bet they were very inspiring athletes! I’ve seen many Cirque du Soleil shows, and even taught English to their acrobats – and they work so hard! The picture of the man balancing on the others’ head is awe-inspiring.
We like circus arts! This looks really neat. Molly recently took a trapeze class she got for her birthday (second year in a row she has asked for this). She got to hang on to the bar by her knees, reach for the person catching from the other trapeze and let go trusting she would be caught (her faith was well placed).
