While we were in England, Keegan and I baked many desserts, baked goods, and pancakes (crepes). Zorka is trained and experienced in French pastry and she gave us lessons, instructing us on how to make many things. My favorite thing to make was a chocolate log, because it was very fun decorating it. After making the chocolate sponge and crème filling, I spread the crème on a flat rectangle of chocolate sponge, and rolled it into a “log”. Then I spread chocolate ganache all over the log, cut an end of it diagonally, and stuck it on the log’s side to make it look even more like a log. Then to make it look even more like a log, I brushed it with a fork to give it the effect of tree bark. To decorate, I added snow (powdered sugar) and holly that I picked from Grandad and Zorka’s backyard. It was yummy! Some other things that Keegan and I made were crepes, Yorkshire pudding, choux pastry, crème pâstissière (custard), St. Honoré, chocolate cake, French tuile, and trifle. Crikey, it was a lot!!! I loved getting to bake all those things, and it was very fun getting to spend time with Zorka!
