Broadened Perspectives

One of the benefits that I have been anticipating from our year of travel is our boys’ broadened perspectives.  We’ve talked many times about how our comfortable life in Redmond is not typical but I know that since they’re young it is hard for them really to understand (and me too, probably).

Michael took them to do some errands while I had a massage in Orlando.  They stopped at a Wawa (a gas station) and the younger three boys, in need of sunglasses, each chose a pair, coming out to around $13 each.  The gas station attendant proclaimed, “y’all rich!”

Our plan is working!

We have all giggled at that story but $13 sunglasses are a luxury for some even within the U.S. and I love that the attendant pointed that out.

Now we are in Iceland and things tend to cost 2-3x the amount of what they cost at home.  And, like other places in Europe, it often costs to use a restroom.  The typical charge seems to be 200 krona which, times six people, equals about $9.60 per potty stop.  That would make for a pretty expensive day potty-wise if that were our only option.  Thankfully, once in a while we find places that don’t charge which has created lots of excitement and squeals of “It’s free to pee!”

Gratitude for the little things!  Success!
